Reasons Why You Should Use Oven Thermometers

Accurate Temperature Monitoring

An independent oven thermometer resolves the problem by helping you accurately keep track of your cooking temperatures.

The devices have been used by professionals and have reported satisfaction in regards to efficiency making them one of the must-have requirements for your kitchen.

Easy to Install

Modern oven thermometers feature different installation methods. You can either hang or place them on the shelf which saves you time.

Efficient

Aside from being accurate, independent oven thermometers can withstand high cooking temperatures while keeping track of cooking heat inside the oven.

Handy

You do not require skills for you to use oven thermometers. Most of these devices come with HACCP reference to guide you on setting your temperatures to suit your cooking method.

Things to Consider When Buying an Oven Thermometer

Quality

Oven temperatures usually go high, and if your thermometer is not good enough, it may crack due to extreme temperatures. Before investing in an oven thermometer, it is always advocated for one to check on the quality and recommended temperature ranges. Never use a thermometer on cooking methods that require high temperatures and exceed the recommended heat ranges.

Material

Oven thermometers are designed to be used inside the thermometer when cooking. To avoid any contamination, the material used to design the device should be safe. Stainless steel 304 grade is one of the recommended materials.

Besides, check if the thermometer is NSF approved. NSF is a National Sanitation Foundation which ensures food industry standards have been met.

An NSF approved oven thermometer implies that the manufacturer has complied with the industry standards in regards to material, design, performance, and construction and the product is safe for public use.

Temperature Units

Most thermometers indicate temperature units either in Celsius or Fahrenheit. While some feature both unit’s others display in Fahrenheit. Choosing a thermometer which uses both units can help reduce conversion time.

However, the accuracy of the thermometer will always dictate your final result.

Performance

Independent oven thermometers are specifically used to track cooking temperatures accurately. A good thermometer should indicate heat correctly without errors.

A thermometer that has other features like energy efficiency is also a plus. Read customer reviews and determine which thermometer fits your cooking needs.

Temperature Limits

Different type foods are prepared at different temperatures, and this is where the heat limits of an oven thermometer come in. For optimal cooking experience, consider buying a thermometer which can withstand cooking temperatures higher than the recommended heat.  The advantage of this is to enable the thermometer to withstand cooking heat without cracking.

Ease of Use

Oven thermometers can be pretty hard for anyone who has never used them before. Some of these devices come with a HACCP reference dial to help you preset your recommended cooking temperatures with ease.

HACCP is a guide which helps you reduce any chances of acquiring foodborne illness. Taking advantage of these features will help promote a healthy and ultimate cooking experience.

Maintenance

With time your oven thermometer will need to be cleaned and calibrated to improve its performance. A good thermometer should give an optimal performance without calling for regular maintenance.

What’s The Best Oven Thermometer?

Oven thermometers are designed differently. While they may have some similar features, they are not equal. Each device is designed to help you track heat when cooking but under different circumstances. If you are wondering which is the best pick for you, all the above thermometers are an excellent choice for your cooking needs if bought for the right cooking purposes.

Once you have outlined what you need in an oven thermometer, compare and contrast how the features will help you achieve your desired results.

How to Improve Your Oven Thermometer Accuracy

While buying a quality oven thermometer plays a role in your cooking experience, a wrong calibration will affect your cooking. After you have selected your preferred thermometer here is what you are supposed to do.

Mount Your Thermometer

This is where the majority of people go wrong and end up missing it even after spending much on the thermometer. Most modern oven thermometers allow you to either place it on the shelf or hang it on the rack. To ensure even temperature monitoring the thermometer should be placed in the center of the same shelf or rack where the food prepares on.

One benefit of placing your thermometer at the center is to reduce any chances of cold air from the oven door to determine the readings.

Adjust The Oven Temperatures

Once you are satisfied that the thermometer is positioned correctly, you can now preset your preferred temperatures using the dial. Confirm if the oven is preheating by checking the indicator before closing the door. During the pre-heating process, ensure the door remains closed until the pre-set temperatures are reached.

Once the pre-set temperatures are reached, you will hear a beeping sound. Keeping your oven door closed, put on the oven light and wait for about five minutes. Most oven thermometers may indicate lower temperatures than the pre-set ones and require time to re-adjust.

How to Clean Oven Thermometers

Oven thermometers become dirty and require regular cleaning to ensure optimal performance. Cooking fat, baking powder, and other recipes can stain the thermometer glass and if not properly cleaned chances are you will face challenges reading your temperature settings.

However, before using this method, ensure your thermometer glass is waterproof.

To avoid guesswork, here is what you need to do.

  • Once you have used your thermometer, leave it to cool down
  • Put warm water and mild detergent in a dishwasher and scrub using a soft towel
  • Avoid using abrasive detergent or scrubber as it may leave marks on the glass
  • Rinse your it and dry it thoroughly

Some of the stains may be hard to remove with detergent and water. In case your thermometer is not waterproof, or you don't achieve desired results after following the above instructions, you can try to prepare a thick paste using water and baking powder. Apply it on the face of your thermometer and leave it for about 15 minutes then wipe it with a soft cloth. It is a fast and effective method for tough stains.

What Makes a Good Oven Thermometer?

  • A good oven thermometer should be easy to use
  • A great oven thermometer should monitor temperatures accurately
  • A good oven thermometer should function as described
  • A good oven thermometer should be easy to clean and maintain

  1. Dear Foodshark,
I’ve recently bought two of such thermometers for my baking, both have died on me due to not being able to handle the heat. One had a cracked window and the one I have now discoloured so badly over the course of two weeks that it’s now almost impossible to read. Have you tried any of these to the extent that you can say they’re up to the task of daily bread baking at temperatures between 200 and 270C? 400-550F I believe.

    Cheers,
    Joran

  2. All of the oven thermometers that I look at are for electric stoves. Will they work ok in a gas oven? Thank you
